Lent and Black History Month
Lent is a time of year when people give up one thing, but do we really remember what it's for? You're supposed to give up one thing that you see yourself doing too much (almost addicted to) and give it up, so you can spend more time and grow in God. I think most people don't remember this, but (not to point fingers or anything) I don't blame them. When in Bible study, they ask kids, "What are you going to give up for lent?" and they respond with, "I'm going to give up tv." When to begin with they don't watch t.v. that kinda bothers me. And how nonchalantly we break our "lent goals" amazes me. Meh... (using this word a bit too much.) Well, that was just ranting and my train of thought at the moment. And for the record, I gave up video games for lent. (T.T Twilight Princess.... o well)
I must guiltily admit that for many years I have said to myself, "Who needs Black History Month?" And the way they present Black History Month in our schools who can blame me? (many people but that's besides the point.) In school during Black History Month, teachers teach their students about Martin Luther King Jr. (black rights dude who made a speech about dreaming and holding hands w. blue and green children :p), Rosa Parks (bus lady), and George Washington Carver (peanut butter man). But we basically learn about these three people all the time! Not only this, but these people seemed to only affect the "black people." Sure, George Washington Carver invented peanut butter, but many people could live without peanut butter. To many people, Black History Month is a thing that was made for "black people." But after reading this article I've been thinking... maybe Black History Month was more of an "American thing." But maybe more people would think this way if schools taught us about Charles Dew, the black guy who invented the blood bank. And what about the black dude that invented the traffic light? the gas mask? How come we never learned about these people along with MLK Jr. and Rosa Parks. No offense to George Washington Carver, but I'd rather learn about Charles Dew, the traffic light man, and the gas mask man over him anyday.
And String Fest sucked, but my quintet was sweeet... :)
Wonder if Schabes is really going to reprint the program.... (food for thought. haha)I should ask Svenn about the man w. no arms joke tomorrow. :D
And could someone tell me if my wallpaper/background image works?
